Voula- Vouliagmeni: Tribute to the most popular areas of the Athenian Riviera

Among the most popular areas of the Athenian Riviera, Vouliagmeni and Voula attract the interest both for their natural beauty and their history. The lake of Vouliagmeni, from which the area got its name, was created when the roof of a cave collapsed about 2.000 years ago and is considered to have the world's longest underground tunnel with a length of 800 meters and a depth of 80 meters. Swimming in Lake Vouliagmeni surrounded by lush green from the palm and pine trees is an alternative thermal (therapeutic) experience as temperatures fluctuate between 22 and 29 degrees Celsius all year round. Situated on the rocks of Laimos is the chapel of Agios Nikolaos, who is considered the saint of sailors and the Navy; built in 1947 by the painter- sculptor Nikolaos Xeno. In Vouliagmeni is also the world-famous Four Seasons Astir Palace Hotel and the famous Astir Beach, where the ruins of the temple of Apollo Zostiras are kept. The temple was discovered in 1924, when children from the Vouliagmeni Orphanage were playing on the shore.

Opposite Astir Beach, overlooking the blue-flagged beach Vouliagmeni Bay, is a renowned watersports club the Nautical Club of Vouliagmeni est. 1937 where its reoccurring members from generation to generation follow.  A marina for luxury super yachts is also being built in the area, which will accommodate 59 pleasure boats and will have a helipad and luxury boutiques. Next to Vouliagmeni is Voula, a beautiful area, ideal for families, while the Nautical Club of Voula operates in the area for lovers of sea sports. Its central square is one of the hottest focal points of the southern suburbs and the view from Ano Voula that reaches Piraeus is breathtaking. Within a 10-minute car drive from Vouliagmeni and Voula, with direction towards Pireaus port; is the cosmopolitan area of Glyfada offering a variety of commercial and retail shops, stores, restaurants and bars. Services including private/ walk-in clinics and commercial establishments are also settled in the centre. By the seaside, the 5-star Hotel, One&Only Aesthesis, expected to open its doors in 2023, is set within a protected forest reserve of 21 hectares offering top class services and amenities.

Alternatively, within a 10 minutes drive with direction towards Cape Sounion is the picturesque area of Varkiza, overlooking crystal waters of the Saronic Gulf, recognized as one of the windsurfers favourite beaches’. Beside the Varkiza beach resort is the Nautical Athletic Club Vari-Varkiza where an array of different water sports are available. Characterized as one of the more traditional Greek neighbourhoods in the southern riviera, one can visit the open-air fish market right beside the  wooden caiques.  Along the seacoast is one of Athens’ most popular summer restaurant – bar – club known as Island Club & Restaurant, overlooking spectacular sea views. In the 1960s-70s Varkiza was considered a summer holiday destination, whereas today it has become a permanent residence all year round to many Greeks and foreigners.
