Kefalonia: Tribute to the island of "Captain Koreli"



Located in the heart of the Ionian sea, Kefalonia has gained significant international touristic attraction after the filming of "Captain Corelli’s Mandolin". It is the biggest island of the Ionian boasting a breathtaking natural landscape with exotic beaches, picturesque villages and magical underground caves!


The island obtains rich history once ruled by the Venetian, French and British. It is portrayed via tis influenced architecture, cityscape structure, historical sightseeings and gastronomy. Most villages were affected by the disastrous earthquake of 1953. Even though Fiscardo is the most renowned village due to its busy marina, the island's capital is Argostoli. About 3 km north of Argostoli stands the lighthouse of Saint Theodoroi, constructed in 1828 by the British. Poros and Sami host the main ports.



Several beaches have been awarded the Blue Flag standing out for their emerald waters. The most impressive beach is  Myrtos, a beautiful bay with turquoise waters surrounded by cliffs.  Antisamos is also famous for its gorgeous scenery as well as Emblisi and Foki, near Fiscardo, Fteri and Petanoi.



The Cave of Melissani in Kefalonia, known as the roofless cave, is considered one of the most significant places to visit in Greece. It is B-shaped cave with two chambers separated by an island in the center. There is also the Drogarati Cave that was discovered 300 years ago when a strong earthquake caused a collapse that revealed the cave's entrance.



Scuba diving is particularly popular due to the island's rocky coastline. The most famous diving sites are the Temple Cave in Fiscardo and the Catacombs with a max depth of 21m. Sea turtles Caretta- Caretta is one of the island's attractions. Actually, Kefalonia is the home for 2 of the 7 sea turtle species that exist in the world.
